(FamilyConservationPAC.com) – Leading black Democrats condemn California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) for selecting Laphonza Butler of Maryland to succeed Dianne Feinstein in the Senate rather than Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), currently running for the position.
Although Butler was born and raised in California and owns a property there, she currently resides in Maryland.
She must register to vote in California to be eligible to replace Feinstein, who passed away on Friday at 90.

Feinstein declared her retirement earlier this year, and Lee has been vying to take his position. After taking office, Butler could also seek the position, which would infuriate Lee’s supporters.
According to The San Francisco Chronicle:
“It’s going to hurt him,” Fred Jordan, chairman of the board of the San Francisco African American Chamber of Commerce, said Sunday. “Those women in South Carolina that gave Joe Biden the bump, they’re gonna be outraged.”
Jordan called Newsom’s appointment of Butler “disingenuous” and said he “has not fulfilled his promise” to appoint a Black woman to the seat. He wanted Newsom to appoint Lee, who he called “the most qualified” person he could have tapped.
He slammed Newsom’s comment earlier this month that appointing Lee “would be completely unfair to the Democrats that have worked their tail off. That primary is just a matter of months away, I don’t want to tip the balance of that.”
Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Katie Porter (D-CA) are two more prominent candidates for the Senate.
Although there are several Republican contenders, they are thought to have little chance of winning in the heavily Democratic state.
