(FamilyConservationPAC.com) – During a news conference on Monday, China subtly warned House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from traveling to Taiwan in reaction to a report claiming he has plans to travel there later this year.

One-China principle should be sincerely upheld, the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Mao Ning said at a briefing on Monday.

“We urge certain Americans to do so.” Additionally, the representative stated that China is “opposed to any official interactions with Taiwan,” alluding inadvertently to McCarthy’s intentions to visit.

China was replying to a query on news that the Pentagon was “early stages” of preparing a trip to the island nation for the California Republican later this year, according to a report from Punchbowl News.

The spokeswoman remained mum on whether China would react in any manner to the visit.

After Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visited the island nation while she was speaker of the House, McCarthy’s travel would be the second consecutive year a speaker of the House visited the country.

Despite the Biden administration finally supporting the travel, she initially received warnings from China and the White House. McCarthy backed Pelosi’s journey.

China has intensified military exercises close to the island during the voyage to frighten potential visitors. Pelosi became the most senior official to visit the nation since 1997 since then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA).

Despite China’s intimidation efforts, she did it successfully.

Given the enormous security risks involved with the trip and the possibility that China may try to use the same intimidation techniques it used in the lead-up to Pelosi’s visit, the Pentagon will likely have a lot of work to do when McCarthy visits in the spring.

Since Pelosi’s visit, Congress has authorized extra security assistance for the island nation.

It would also coincide with McCarthy’s and the House Republicans’ hardline attitude on China in the new Congress, which included the creation of a bipartisan Select Committee to look into China and determine how to limit the communist nation’s expanding influence abroad.

Only 65 lawmakers, all Democrats, voted against the committee’s formation.
