Meet the 4 Democrat-Appointed Judges Who Disqualified Trump in Colorado

( – Four Democratic-appointed judges to the Colorado Supreme Court unilaterally barred former President Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 primary ballot to prevent voters from choosing the next president.

The Court disregarded the Senate’s exoneration of Trump from the House allegations, instead citing the partisan January 6 Committee’s contentious conclusion that Trump participated in insurrection.

The Court’s unilateral determination that Trump engaged in insurrection comes despite Trump having never been convicted of that – or any other – crime, or even been charged in court with the crime of insurrection.

He was acquitted by the U.S. Senate of charges of engaging in insurrection and continues to deny wrongdoing.

The following four Democratic judges declared that Trump had committed insurrection:

1. Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. (D) appointed Judge Monica M. Márquez:

Márquez is the first gay member of the Court in history. Márquez is the openly gay state supreme court justice who has served the longest in the history of the US as of 2021.

Márquez belongs to the self-described Bench Dream Team, a group of judges committed to inclusion and diversity in the legal profession.
Márquez used to work in Denver as an employment lawyer and general commercial litigator.

2. Melissa Hart, the judge – Nominated by former Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper:

Hart is a Denver native who is married with two kids. She served as the Harvard Women’s Law Journal’s book review editor and the Harvard Law Review’s articles editor.

She worked as a trial lawyer at the Department of Justice in Washington, DC, following a clerkship with Justice John Paul Stevens of the US Supreme Court.

According to a 2020 Office of Judicial Performance Evaluation, Hart is “fair and impartial, makes decisions without regard to possible criticism and treats parties equally, regardless of race, sex, or economic status.”

3. William W. Hood, III, the judge Nominated by former Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper:

Hood attended Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania to earn a law degree. Hood worked for 10 years as a prosecutor and litigation law partner in Denver before being appointed to the Court.

According to a 2016 evaluation from the Office of Judicial Performance, Justice Hood performs well in treating attorneys courteously, providing equal treatment to all parties regardless of race, gender, or economic status, and allowing parties to present their arguments.

4. John Hickenlooper (D) appointed Judge Richard L. Gabriel:

Gabriel was born in Brooklyn, New York. He has two grown children with his spouse. Gabriel’s 2018 judicial performance evaluation stated that he “performs strongly in the areas of being prepared for oral argument, being courteous, and treating parties equally.”

According to the Denver Post, Gabriel was accused of harassment in 2021 by a female law clerk.

Meanwhile, a hearing on Friday will examine Trump’s ability to run for office in Maine.

Through MSNBC:

“Interestingly, a difference in Maine from some of the other cases around the country is that the hearing wasn’t presided over by a judge but rather by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who has said she will decide the matterthis week.

Other secretaries of state have deferred to the courts, such as in the Colorado case that’s awaiting a decision from the state’s top court.”
