Buying a Bible? Feds Might Flag You as Extremist!

( – Following the incident at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Rep. Jim Jordan, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, released a startling report revealing that federal law enforcement agencies wanted financial institutions to flag otherwise benign purchases and search terms associated with former President Donald Trump to identify potential extremists.

Last week, Jordan forwarded correspondence concerning this to Noah Bishoff, the former head of the Treasury Department’s Office of Stakeholder Engagement and Integration within the FinCEN’s Strategic Operations Division.

The letter claims that data gathered by Jordan’s committee and select subcommittee indicate that FinCEN allegedly pursued law-abiding Americans “on the basis of protected political and religious expression.”

Financial institutions were allegedly advised to search “Zelle payment messages” for phrases like “TRUMP” and “MAGA” in a FinCEN document cited in the letter.

Jordan stated that these same institutions could potentially identify “Lone Actor/Homegrown Violent” extremists by reviewing customer transactions and searching for the purchase of “religious texts” or “bus tickets, rental cars, or plane tickets, for travel areas with no apparent purpose.” This FinCEN analysis was referenced in the letter.

The letter also claims that Key Bank prepared presentation slides regarding keywords and merchant category codes that financial institutions could use to identify “dangerous International Terrorists / Domestic Terrorists / Homegrown Violent Extremists (‘Lone Wolves’)” or “potential active shooters.”

Key phrases for the MCCs Key Bank were allegedly “3484: Small Arms” and “5091: Sporting and Recreational Goods and Supplies,” along with well-known national gun retailers like “Cabela’s” and “Bass Pro Shops.”

The letter states that FinCEN sent these Key Bank PowerPoint to additional banking institutions.

Jordan’s letter makes plain that “Americans as potential threat actors” were probably described by FinCEN and collaborating federal law enforcement officials if the records are authentic, merely for “exercising their Second Amendment” and other rights.

“This kind of pervasive financial surveillance … into Americans’ private transactions is alarming and raises serious doubts about FinCEN’s respect for fundamental civil liberties,” Jordan stated.

Although the letter claims that January 6 was the catalyst for FinCEN’s purported intrusion into Americans’ private purchases, an exclusive report from Fox News Digital on the letter implies that January 6 was merely a pretext to support a much larger investigation into conservatives and Trump supporters.

None of the committee’s or select subcommittee’s documents contained “specific time frames or limitations for banks searching customer transactions with the terms,” according to a source “familiar” with the investigation who spoke with the outlet.

Federal agents most likely expanded their investigation to gather information “beyond” that was purportedly related to January 6.

The letter requests that former FinCEN Director Bishoff contact Judiciary Committee employees no later than January 31, 2024, at 5 p.m., to arrange a “transcribed interview.”

The letter claims that Bishoff’s testimony will clarify:

“Mass collection and use of private information by federal law enforcement without following the law;”

“Any protocols, if any, by FinCEN to protect Americans’ privacy and constitutional rights when receiving and using such information; and”

“FinCEN’s general engagement with the private sector on law-enforcement matters.”
