Biden Demands ‘Immediate Ceasefire’ from Israel

( – In a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, President Joe Biden demanded an “immediate ceasefire” and threatened to withhold U.S. assistance for the conflict if Israel did not cooperate.

The White House issued a statement saying:

“President Biden spoke by telephone with Prime Minister Netanyahu. The two leaders discussed the situation in Gaza. President Biden emphasized that the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable. He made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers.

He made clear that U.S. policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps. He underscored that an immediate ceasefire is essential to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians, and he urged the Prime Minister to empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home.

The two leaders also discussed public Iranian threats against Israel and the Israeli people. President Biden made clear that the United States strongly supports Israel in the face of those threats.”

According to Biden’s remark, the United States has essentially accepted Hamas’s demand that a truce be implemented before an agreement is reached to free the other 134 Israeli detainees. The United States and Israel had previously agreed that a deal was necessary for a truce.

The Biden administration denied changing its stance when the United States refrained from supporting Resolution 2728 last month, which allowed the resolution to pass even though it separated a hostage agreement from a ceasefire.

White House national security spokeswoman John Kirby declined to say in a news briefing what would happen if Israel failed to implement the adjustments Biden had sought.

Kirby stated that Biden’s decision to support the demand for a ceasefire—a demand he had long opposed—was influenced in part by the unintentional death of seven World Central Kitchen employees during an airstrike earlier in the week.

Biden’s demand will make it very difficult for Israel to accomplish its war objectives. It will not have the backing of the United States if it decides to go after the remaining Hamas forces in Rafah. Furthermore, Israel won’t have the clout of U.S. backing for ongoing military operations against Hamas in Gaza if it tries to broker a hostage agreement.

Throughout the conflict, Hamas has sought to disassociate Israel from American assistance. It has achieved this by utilizing Palestinian citizens as human shields to increase the number of civilian casualties and provoke protests around the world.

Biden’s proposal, unless Israel is prepared to carry on the battle in Gaza alone, signifies the success of Hamas’s strategy.

As two Iranian generals were killed earlier in the week by an Israeli airstrike in Syria, Israel braced itself for potential retaliatory strikes from Iran. Israel has been attacked by terrorist proxies that Iran supplies and finances.

Kirby found it challenging to reconcile Biden’s pledge to support Israel’s battle against Hamas with the possibility of policy adjustments when Fox News’ Peter Doocy questioned Kirby about whether his support was “unwavering” following October 7.
