The recent report from The New York Times indicates that naturalization ceremonies usually increase in number before an election, and it also highlights the rise in approval rates for citizenship, which grants full voting rights.
Xiao Wang, an immigration analyst and the CEO of Boundless, a company that uses government data to analyze immigration patterns and provides services to immigrants seeking professional assistance with the application process, stated that the surge in applications has corresponding effects.
The surge in naturalization efficiency isn’t just about clearing backlogs; it’s potentially reshaping the electorate merely months before a pivotal election.
Every citizenship application could be a vote that decides Senate seats or even the presidency.

The New York Times report states that application processing speed is now comparable to the levels in 2013 and 2014, taking less than five months.
During President Joe Biden’s office, approximately 3.3 million immigrants attained citizenship.
This occurred with less than two months remaining before the end of the 2024 fiscal year. The change in speed can also be attributed to the most recent change in administrations at the White House.
After taking office in 2021, Biden issued an executive order that sought to reverse former President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration agenda and “restore faith” in the legal immigration system, the NY Times report outlines.
Among other steps, the order called for action to “substantially reduce current naturalization processing times.”
The Biden administration also shortened the naturalization application to 14 pages from 20. The application fee was raised to $710 from $640 in April. Still, it made qualifying for a discount easier for low-income people.
